Ten years ago, I was nicknamed “Brainiac.” That was when the Smallville series was popular on The CW (or whatever the network was back then), and one of my coworkers (who was also a fan of the show) thought the nickname was fun because she wasn’t entirely sure what I did there. My programs were different from everything else in that area, so the name stuck. Problem is, I’m still not sure if I’m supposed to know they called me that or not. They certainly never did to my face, although I heard murmurs to the effect quite often before I moved to my current workplace in 2010.
If I had to give myself a nickname now, it would be Captain Boomerang. Boomerangs seem to be a theme of sorts in life right now, as in things keep coming back to me. I think I’m done, and get smacked again. It’s mostly little things, like irritations and aggravations, but you know how that is. It’s never the big stuff that breaks us. Human nature is to stand up to those huge challenges. It’s the small stuff that sends you over the edge. You think something's taken care of, and it comes back to smack you with "one more thing." I have no idea what I did to attract this, but I need to fix it - fast! Unlike the video below, it's not lodging someplace else. These things keep coming back and taking off my own head. You get sick of that fast.
I think we’ve all heard that what goes around, comes around, and I certainly want to use this principle to turn things around. If it's going to come back, it needs to bring back good stuff, not three more demons. How about instead of an endless barrage of irritations and more work, I see the hard work I’ve done come back with reaping a harvest of good? For example, we did our taxes a few weeks ago and I discovered that last year was my best year for book sales in a while. How about tossing that out there and having it bring back more sales? Let’s publish the last book in the Earthside series and bring back some more readers who enjoy it. Let’s toss out some promotion and bring back a niche market. Let's toss out a review request and bring back something bigger.
People sometimes tell me this is testing the Lord. No, it’s not. There’s nothing wrong with praying for His favor and hoping for good things. People certainly don’t have a problem with seeking the favor of man. They build up credentials, ride coattails, and kiss fanny to position themselves to get ahead. Maybe what this world needs is less of that fake stuff and some more real, honest prayer for the Lord’s direction and favor for a change. The world would be a better place if we all did that. But that's just my opinion and you know what they say about that. Everybody has one.
I'm going to do it the old fashioned way through prayer, obedience to the Spirit, and hard work. I know that's not popular in this day and time, but in my experience that's the stuff that lasts. In the meantime, let’s all enjoy this clip from the CW crossover event a few years back, because I do believe this Captain Boomerang was better than the one in the Suicide Squad movie. But then again, that’s me. More opinion. Hmm. Obviously, I can't do this. It would be cool if I could. Oh well.
