Today, I’d like to offer a special thanks to Sam Law for reviewing The Earthside Trilogy in his blog, It’s Good To Read. I do appreciate the good review, and encourage you to check it out because he gives an excellent overview of each book in the trilogy.
What I appreciate even more is Sam taking the time to read it. I know that reading a trilogy is a big endeavor in our busy lifestyles. I agree with what Min Jin Lee said in her recent Writer’s Digest interview about how selling books is more about asking for a reader’s time than money. She said that people will spend money on what they want, but they’re more particular on how they spend. That’s where the real sacrifice is, so that’s where people are more particular. Indie authors gripe about how people will spend $6 on a cup of coffee but won’t spend $2.99 on an ebook, but the truth is that they can drink that cup of coffee on the go, while reading that book requires them to spend time that they could spend doing other things. Another paycheck will come. The minute that just passed will never come again – it’s gone forever. I think that middle age people especially feel this crunch as we struggle to manage our time most effectively amongst multiple (and often, conflicting) commitments and desires.
The truth is that only the bigger bibliophiles (like myself) believe that an indie writer is worth taking a chance on. To me, the concept of finding another writer that thrills me is worth the investment. To others, they need blogs like Sam’s to tell them whether it’s worth the investment.
It’s all about priorities. I love books. That’s why I read and write. But the world is full of things, and each of us has a different calling, passion, and interest. Different things strike different people. I guess that’s why it’s good there’s so much variety. Still, it would be nice if it were easier for us indie authors to break through the millions of other titles to at least reach a niche. I know I’m still working on it, and I have plenty of company. We readers and writers need to help and support one another in this new wave of ebooks and internet commerce.
I can make at least one part of this easier for you: today, The Earthside Trilogy is free on Kindle. So the cost element isn’t gone. It’s just a matter of clicking, downloading, and deciding to make that investment in your next block of reading time.
