The Reality of Resolutions

12/31/2017

If there's one thing that 2017 has taught me, it's that life happens and there are many things that are completely out of your control. We want to be better people, and to see things improve in our lives. Certainly, we have a lot of power to do that and help it along the way. However, there will always be those things that you can't control. They happen, and you have to deal with them. I've seen many of them this year in all areas of life. It can be frustrating to feel powerless, especially when you've tried to hard to do better.

That's life. As my pastor told me when Chloe died, bad things just happen, and there's nothing you can do but move forward in faith. That's certainly true. It's also true that you need to be particularly mindful of how you do it, and to make sure you take that journey with wisdom and purity of heart. It's easy to get distracted and for our emotions to mislead us.

That being said, I thing New Year's Resolutions are important, but for more reasons than we realize. It's human nature to want to be better, and making resolutions to improve ourselves strengthens our foundation to handle those pesky things that we can't control. Grief, disappointment, discouragement, and failure are never easy, but they journey through them is better if we're already in a habit of doing the best with what we've got. Resolutions to be more faithful, get in shape through diet and exercise, get organized, get rid of old habits and establish new good habits, accomplish a goal or dream, take up something new, make a change, or to just do better in day to day life give us the strength we need to keep going when the going gets tough. That determination, internal motivation, and self discipline are important to keep us going when the world keeps turning, despite the fact that we don't feel like going with it. It opens our heart and our eyes to truth, and helps us to gain wisdom from the things we wished hadn't happened (but did anyway). It connects us with what we can control, so we can figure out how to manage what we can't control.

The key to success with any New Year's Resolution is to make it a habit. Keep at it with an intention to make it part of your daily life. Habits take 21-28 days to form, so the first month will be the hardest, but after that it will flow better if you don't give us. So don't give up. Keep at it. Making yourself a better person makes you a stronger person to deal with all life has to offer. I wish you luck and success with this endeavor.

2017 was a mixed bag year, as they all wind out being. But that's alright, because that's life. I might not have any formal resolutions, but I do resolve this for 2018: to go into it with a mind and heart open to love, joy, wisdom, and courage for what lies ahead. I wish us all love, luck, and happiness now and always.

Happy New Year!

I’m looking forward to an exciting and productive 2018, starting with publication of Emergence, Book Three of The Earthside Trilogy and the full version of The Earthside Trilogy in the next few weeks. Work will also continue on Trigger, The Tenth Dimension, and whatever other ideas the muse brings to me in 2018. I welcome you to join me on these and other adventures into the new year. I also pray that we all have love, joy, blessing, health, inspiration, protection, healing, creativity, wisdom, and prosperity. For now, I pause (along with all of you) to enjoy Christmas with family and friends.

Thanks again for reading! I wish you a safe, joyous, and Merry Christmas! Blessings to you and yours now and always.

What Went Wrong With The Last Jedi

12/20/2017

Did you walk out of seeing The Last Jedi feeling like something was missing? If so, you’re far from alone. I walked out thinking it was good BUT not great, and the more I think about it, the less I like it. It seems there’s a generational divide on reactions to this movie. Millennials’ love it; Generation X says “what the hell did you do?” An excellent question. If you’re in the camp of the latter, let’s talk about how The Last Jedi broke the Star Wars formula. Warning: there are spoilers in this entry. If you haven’t seen it, you can either skip it or forge ahead to figure out whether it’s worth your money and two and a half hour of your life.

I want to open by acknowledging two things. First, there’s nothing wrong with diverging from the norm, and Star Wars has definitely established a “norm” in it’s storytelling. The key is to balance it with suspension of disbelief. When you’re talking about a franchise with as much history as Star Wars, you have to handle such things carefully. Throw a wrecking ball through too much, and you alienate your core fans – and The Last Jedi certainly did that. They got too bogged down in making timely political statements to realize that we’re working with a sci-fi/fantasy franchise where the rules of reality don’t run parallel to life in 2017.

Second, I realize that the mechanics of story-telling have changed since the original trilogy came out in the late 70’s – early 80’s. Gone is the black and white of good and evil. Now we explore the backstory and contributing factors to what made the heroes and villains what they are. Heck, the entire purpose of the prequels (Episodes I, II, and III) were about the rise of Darth Vadar. But now we’re in uncharted territory. The Skywalkers diminish as new heroes and villains rise. Well and fine, and The Force Awakens did a great job in starting that tale. The problem is that they don’t carry that momentum through The Last Jedi. How did they fail?

The portrayal of Luke Skywalker. Whoever wrote his role in The Last Jedi should never write another thing again – ever. Seriously, not even a social media post. Step away from the keyboard and can it. The way Luke Skywalker was treated in The Last Jedi was disrespectful, rude, and dismissive of a major figure in this universe. For this guy who destroyed the Death Star and saved Darth Vader to go from that to “the only thing the Jedi accomplished was allowing the Sith to rise, and getting themselves killed” is ridiculous, and I refuse to believe that his moral character slipped so far with Ben Solo/Kylo Wren to fall to that. He’s stronger and better than that. If his character had to die in this episode fine, but at least let him go out the hero he was. Relegating him to a cranky old man who quit on life was ridiculous. I won’t see the movie in the theater again for this reason alone. Hell, I don’t know if I’ll even buy it when it comes out for sale for this reason alone.

The storyline was thin. The entire basis of this movie was that the rebels ran out of gas. Seriously? This whole thing is based on the fact that they forgot to stop by Circle K? It was the equivalent of Gone in Sixty Seconds, in extremely slow motion. And what little they told wasn’t explained. How did the First Order track them through light speed? Why were they running out of fuel in the first place? How did they get so decimated that there were only about 12 of them left by the end of the movie? Again, the writers’ failed. They really need to log onto The Great Courses and take a few classes on writing and storytelling.

It went too Disney. Ultron quoting Pinocchio in The Avengers: Age of Ultron worked, because James Spader was a master villain who could make it creepy. Princess Leia doing the Mary Poppins through space was ridiculous. I was wondering if Dr. Who’s flying phone booth was going to show up next, or perhaps the Starship Enterprise (oops, that’s right, this is an unacceptable crossover). Likewise, they went a bit overboard on the humor for a Star Wars movie (I felt they did this in Thor Ragnarok, too). Some humor is fine to break up the dramatic tension, but they overdid it. I knew after The Chronicles of Narnia that Disney had a tendency to water down things, but I thought they had worked past that. Obviously, they haven’t, and Disney caters too much to catering to young audiences and making money than remaining true to the story.

They killed the major villain halfway through the second movie in the trilogy. Obviously, they were in a hurry to transition Kylo Wren to the main villain role when they killed Snoke (and again, a gap in storytelling – how could he see everything Kylo thought, and not see THAT?). The problem is that his character is too conflicted, and isn’t properly trained to take this on, as evidenced by his massive failure to capture the rebels and realize that he was fighting a force projection of Luke Skywalker, while Hux was admonishing him not to get distracted and to focus on the mission. And this is a common thing these days: believing that you’re ready to go out on your own after minimal education/training. No, ladies and gentlemen, you aren’t. Learning is a lifelong pursuit. The more stubborn you are about the fact that “you’ve got this,” the harder life will kick you in the butt. Rising to it is a lot tougher without guidance, and leads to more failure along the way. And Yoda was right: failure is the greatest teacher, but it’s also a tough one, especially with no experience or guidance on how to process it in new situations, as both Rey and Kylo Wren are now.

I think Hux would make a better villain at this point. At least he has a good head on his shoulders. If we’re lucky, he’ll rise to be a powerful force to be reckoned with in Episode IX. Getting thrown around like he did in this move should piss him off enough to be a thorn in everybody's side!

They killed Captain Phasma. Why did they go to the trouble to hire the talent of Gwendolyn Christie, and not utilize that potential? She’s more than proved that she’s an excellent actress in Game of Thrones, and capable of playing a powerful character. But once again, Disney was Disney and just went for her “star power” rather than mining the tremendous potential of her talent and character. Case in point: the fight between her and Finn was too short and simple. That should have been one of the climatic points of the plot, especially since Finn was the only one who had a role in this movie that was worth a toot. I’ve always liked him as the Storm Trooper turned Rebel, and was glad to see him better developed. But that fight between him and Phasma should have been so much more. Then again, this is Gwendolyn Christie. He probably would have lost, and fans wouldn’t like that.

The reveal of Rey’s parents. This would have been a lot more powerful if she saw it herself in that vision. Instead, it was a “by the way” from Kylo Wren, who is of questionable reliability. Do we believe it? Or not? That’s just it. The lesson from the reveal that Rey’s parents were drunks who sold her into slavery for drinking money and are now dead is supposed to be that the Force will choose who it will, and anybody can rise to be a hero regardless of their background. The problem is that this would be a more powerful point if we knew for a fact that it’s true. I guess the closing scene is suppose to allude to the veracity that you don’t have to be a Skywalker to be powerful but still, we’ve seen visions go wrong. Case in point: Snoke didn’t see Kylo Wren right there at his end. So who’s vision is right?

I’d like to add here that if it is true that her parents’ were not significant people, then I can totally roll with that. In fact, I like it because it’s an excellent message of hope that anybody can rise to their greatest potential. I had even speculated such since The Force Awakens. But still, it would be nice to have the truth revealed form a more reliable source – if it’s reliable. Even the devil tells us the truth to throw us off from time to time, so who knows? It probably is right, but allowing that seed of doubt was a mistake.

One more thing I’d like to address before closing is Kylo Wren. A lot of people don’t like his character, and I believe it’s because they had expectations of him becoming his grandfather. I think The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi make it clear that we’re getting away from the Skywalkers, and that isn’t going to happen. His character is too conflicted, and that conflict isn’t going to be worked out in this trilogy (if it is, then mark another strike against the writer’s – at best, we’ll see him starting toward resolution by the end of Episode IX). If you open the window and throw out the expectation that he’ll be the next Lord Vader, then he’s a lot easier to take, and to understand. He was better in this movie, but still has a lot of room to grow.

The Last Jedi was an ok movie, but it didn’t blow me away like the other movies in this franchise because the director took too many liberties to change things. Is there hope? J.J. Abrams is coming back for Episode IX, so there certainly is. But he definitely has a hot mess on his hands to clean up. Here’s hoping he can do it.

That’s all today. I hope you have a safe, joyous, and very Merry Christmas.

Bye!

Sneak Peek of Emergence

12/13/2017

Picture
Today, I have a treat for you: a sneak peek at the Prologue of Emergence, Book Three of The Earthside Trilogy. It's coming in early 2018, so be sure to catch up and get ready for the battle for Earth soon.

Enjoy!

Prologue

My heart shall sing of the day your bring,

Let the fires of your justice burn.

Wipe away all tears, for the dawn draws near,

And the world is about to turn.

“Actually, the world is about to burn.”

The sanctuary went silent as the parishioners of Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel in New Orleans turned to see Kalea Kerner striding up the aisle, her long, dark hair streaming behind her.

“That was a beautiful opening hymn,” Kalea stepped beside the St. Jude Shrine to the left of the altar. “The Magnificant has always been my favorite. It’s prophetic, isn’t it?”

“Ma’am, we don’t allow women to speak in the church,” the Priest said softly from the pulpit.

Kalea smiled. “Didn’t Moses tell you to welcome the alien amongst you?”

“I believe the word is ‘foreigner,” the priest said.

Kalea shrugged. “It’s appropriate to pray to Saint Jude now. Humanity’s a lost cause. You’ve never been in a more desperate situation than the one you face now.”

“Save us!” a woman shouted from the back. She rushed up the aisle toward Kalea, but Kalea held up a hand, a blue force field surrounding her. The woman bounced off the force field, landing on her back in the center of the aisle.

“It’s too late,” Kalea said.

“It can’t be!” another voice cried out.

“I told you ten months ago that we were willing to cooperate with your government to deal with the cybernetic aliens. They chose to turn us away.”

“That was the government! We had no say in that,” a voice shouted.

“You elected your leaders. You put them in power. You are as responsible for their failures as they are,” Kalea said. She wandered to the pulpit, where the priest stared at her for a moment before shrinking away; allowing her to step to the microphone. “You did fine for a while. You cooperated. You even helped us discover more. The problem is, your leaders let your earthly enemies plant doubt in your minds. Once it took root, there was nothing that could convince you of the truth. Typical human beings. You start the course, but you can’t finish it. You aren’t capable of endurance. We thought you were, but we were wrong. Only the elite amongst you are destined to survive, and they’re too few to save the rest.”

“Whose side are you on?” a woman shouted.

Kalea leaned forward. “We’re on the side of survival. We want to save you, but you don’t want to be saved. You want your petty wars more than you want to preserve the sanctity of what you have, and now you will lose everything.” She stared at the Saint Jude shrine. “Say your prayers. Lift up your petitions. Cast your spells. Hold your fasts. Cling to whatever faith you hold, because it’s all you have left.” She stared at the congregation, her eyes glinting silver. “Only supernatural intervention can save you now. You’re too stubborn for anything but extinction.”

A gasp rose as Kalea stepped from the pulpit and walked down the center aisle. The woman from the aisle threw herself at Kalea’s feet.

“Save us!” she sobbed. “We don’t want to die. We’re sorry.”

Kalea shook her head. “We’ve inhabited our chosen ones, and the ones that accepted us have been taken under our protection.”

“What about the cybernetic aliens?” a voice asked.

“You waited too long to acknowledge the truth. They’re here.”

“You can beat them,” the woman said softly. “Can anything make this right?”

“We will fight them to the best of our ability,” Kalea said.

“What about the rest of us?”

“I hope it’s not too late.” Kalea held out her hands, pushing the doors open with a bolt of blue energy and disappearing in the sunrise on the horizon.

Life Rolls On

12/11/2017

I knew the moment would come, and it actually happened Saturday morning when Rick came downstairs and said “Constantine was in the mid-season finale of Legends of Tomorrow and will be on the next episode in February.”

What? What else did I miss this past week?

Plenty, it seems. Grief sucks all the time, but grief during the holidays sucks even more. Not only is everybody holly and jolly while you have a loss, but you wake up from the sorrow funk to realize that your husband is an officer in his Masonic lodge, you have three holiday parties over the next week, your Christmas cards are bordering on being late to get mailed out, somebody has been waiting on you to get back on them about book promotion, you have an article due this week, your groceries are pitifully low, your laundry basket is full, southern California is on fire, and winter came.

Zoiks!

Life moves on (obviously!), and I have to get better moving along with it. Honestly, it’s probably for my own good, too. Chloe is still gone and it hurts, but it’s also not going to change. I have to live with this space, and the best way is to keep moving on through the grief, to learn new ways to cope, to live.

And so I shall.

I did stream that episode of Legends of Tomorrow over the weekend. Ironically, one of their main characters died the previous week in the Crisis on Earth X event, and one of the characters said something about putting the grief in a box, putting the lid on it, and locking it because they had a job to do. Obviously, that won’t work. Grief isn’t so easily managed or contained. It must be felt and worked through, and that’s done on your feet in a world that keeps on turning.

Yes, it’s for my own good and the good of all those around me. But I have to admit that it’s nice to be awake again, and to see the world around me still moving. I have a lot of experience with grief, but it’s still good to see that confirmation that life moves on, and I can engage and impact it in good ways. Sure, there will still be guilt, sorrow, and anger to work through, but I can do it with the help of the Holy Spirit, and the support of family and friends.

That’s all today. Take care, and have a good week.

Bye!
