Since this blog is supposed to be how life influences my writing, it seems appropriate to give you an update on what I'm doing with it. Especially since I just completed a blog series on handling the stress and frustration of a world turned upside down these past few months. Of course, it's fired up the muse. If anything has benefited from Corno-madness, my writing has. I imagine a lot of writers could say that.
I won three awards in the 2020 Author Shout Reader Ready Awards. This is a big deal, because there aren't many book awards for indie authors who write commercial fiction. Convergence and Blurry won silver medal "Recommended Read" awards, and Move, Book One of The Tanger Falls Mystery won a bronze medal "honorable mention." I'm very happy about that.
I worked with beta readers and a reviewer in March, April, and May on Domino, Book One of The Sentience Series. They were extremely helpful, and I put the finishing touches on rewrites and revisions based on their feedback. In fact, they were so helpful that I finally got a basic plan together for the rest of the series and completed the rough draft for Phantasm, Book Two of The Sentience Series last week as well. It looks like The Sentience Series will be comprised of four novellas, so that means that half of the series is "in progress" now. I think I'm going to take this one a big slower than The Earthside Trilogy. I wrote the drafts of Earthside all at once which was nice to get the story out, but the problem is that I rewrote half of the second book, which meant I had to make major modifications to the third book to make it flow right. This time, I'm going to make sure one book in the series is pretty much set before I write the next book. I finally got Domino to a place where I'm happy with it, which made Phantasm easier to write. I'm just glad this series is in progress.
I finally got a publication in 2020 as well. I contributed a short story titled "Light" to the Writer's in Lockdown: A Collection of Short Stories anthology that published a few weeks ago. I'm very happy to be back into short stories, because I'm always talking about getting back into them. I've tried to keep a goal of writing at least two flash fiction or short story pieces a week (if I'm not working on The Sentience Series). Let's just say that some weeks are better than others in that regard. I generated this one story that got published, and have queried a few other pieces. We'll see how that goes. It would be nice to get back into that. Flash fiction and short stories are fun to write, and a bit less stressful. Plus, it's good to keep your name out there when you're in between book publications, as I am now. Domino probably won't be ready for release until 2021, so short stories are a good way to stay active in publishing until that series is ready for the world.
So that's where it's at with my writing. Lockdowns, shutdowns, and quarantines haven't been good for much, but it seems they've been feeding artistic endeavors quite well. Mine, at least, have benefited. I hope you've also found some success and forward momentum in some areas of your life in the madness that's been life the past few months.
