Yea right, especially when your calendar and reminder app are chiming more than Santa’s bells. Or is that the Salvation Army dude ringing a bell? It’s hard to tell with people everywhere needing things, whining, complaining, bumping into you, stalling traffic, and generally making a career of getting in your way. THERE ARE SEVEN MILLION PEOPLE ON THE PLANET AND EVERY ONE OF THEM EITHER WANT SOMETHING FROM YOU OR ARE GETTING IN YOUR WAY!!!!! I think that’s why I see so many social media posts the second weekend of December saying that people decided to stay home and bake cookies all weekend.
I’m here to tell you that you’re right. It is a wonderful time of year, but it’s overstimulating. I think that’s why people get rude and cranky this time of year. I often say that the holiday season is when we demonstrate why we Christ in the first place! The stress has reached a boiling point, and we explode when the hustle and bustle of the season cause us to lose sight of ourselves and our needs.
I give you permission to take a holiday sabbatical this weekend. Sometimes, the only way to keep your sanity is to drop out of the race. Take a few minutes right now to make a plan to progressively get it done, starting on Monday. Then tell the world that you’re busy, and invest in yourself. Because you aren’t lying: you’re busy attending to yourself so they don’t have to attend to you later. Trust me; taking care of yourself is as good for others as it is for you. Nobody wants a meltdown for Christmas, and this is how we diffuse that lump of coal in the holiday season. If you don’t do it this weekend, do it next weekend. Just do it one of the next two weekends so we can keep the holiday merry and bright for ourselves, our families, and everybody around us. Sleep in, dress down, bake those cookies, order a pizza, and park yourself in the recliner to read or marathon watch a TV series or movies. Trust me, real life isn’t going anywhere. It’s like a bouncy ball – drop it, and it will bounce right back at you to be dealt with later. So bounce that ball and take a break before it boomerangs back on Monday.
That’s all today. Enjoy your weekend off, and take care.
Bye!
