January is boring.
It can even be a bit depressing. I saw a post on social media yesterday that summed it up perfectly: last month, it was winter wonderland. This month, the same thing is cold, grey, dreary suck. So true. The heightened activity of the fall and holiday season have passed, leaving behind the short, cold monotonous days of winter. I realize that winter is a season of rest that’s necessary for the growth of spring and abundance of summer, but it’s hard to deal with the “crash” from activity and celebration to monotony. January has nothing to offer unless you have a birthday or anniversary this month.
I will admit some gratitude for this after a busy holiday season, but you still wonder how to break the monotony so you don’t get stuck in a rut of “blah.” I’ve heard a few people suggest that some holiday parties should be rescheduled for January, when things are slower and people have time to enjoy them. I think that’s a great idea, but most people resist it because what’s the point of celebrating when what you’re celebrating has passed? And yet, we wonder why people make a big deal out of the National Championship and Super Bowl –
So that leaves us to our own devices. I think my best writing progress is typically in January and February, when there are fewer distractions. I’m also listening to some writing courses I bought from The Great Courses during their 70% off sale around Christmas. It’s fantastic to learn new things that will help my writing, and to listen to something other than the regular weather radio loop while I get dressed in the mornings. Sometimes, one small change can shake things up enough to keep you refreshed and alert.
I had a moment last night when the realization of how dark the living room was made me sad. It’s funny that it’s been down for two weeks, but it was last night, when I was back in the full swing of “regular life” that it hit me. I guess I saw still celebrating some rest in my time off after Christmas so I didn’t notice it was gone until I fully settled back in my routine. But Christmas always comes back around, I thought, and like last year, it will probably be back before I’m ready for it again!
I hope whatever you do to beat the winter blahs refreshes and inspires you. Just remember, as I did last night, that everything always comes back around. Spring will be here soon, followed by summer, fall, and then the holidays again. Enjoy this slow season. It might not be fun and exciting, but you need the rest of routine just as much as the natural world does. Heaven and nature continue to sing; it’s just softly now in this season of rest.
That’s all today. Take care, and have a great rest of the week.
Bye!
