It's a new name for an old concept, and you won't believe how it came about. Actually, you probably will. It started with my last entry.
You'll recall that I completed the rough draft of Broken Time last Thursday. It's a novel about a physicist whose research causes the apocalypse. The novel begins at the ending, and then takes you back through time to points where events or actions she took lead to the ending we see in the beginning. The question is, will her final decision be one that saves it all, or collapses it all into destruction?
As mentioned, it took a lot of planning, research, and work. I was glad to have it done, and immediately moved on to doing another round of edits on the remaining three novellas of The Sentience Series. I had an odd nostalgic moment when I recalled the Arrow series I loved on the CW, in particular a scene from the first crossover event where he first fought Captain Boomerang. I even shared that clip on Twitter and Facebook. I chalked it up to seeing some articles online about the possibility of the role being reprised and a mention of crossovers the network did. Then, on Friday and Saturday, I found myself thinking about my maternal grandfather a lot. He passed away almost 32 years ago, but there hasn't been anything lately that should have brought him to mind. (Both his birthday and the anniversary of his passing are in October). I figured it out Saturday when I read this line while reading Revenant (Book Three of The Sentience Series):
"You are free to chose. You are not free of the consequences of your choice."
Granddaddy often talked to me about the concept of "reaping and sowing" in Galatians 6:7. He was a big believer in it, and I've seen it come to pass in my life and in circumstances around me to be a believer in it myself. Today, we talk about karma, and/or accepting and dealing with the consequences of your choices, but it's the same thing. What goes around, comes around, like a boomerang. And I just wrote an entire novel based on that concept.
Wow.
Well, since we're a twenty first century society and I'm the kind of person who believes a lot in the effect of small things leading to big rewards, and of how things fit together and the rewards and consequences of actions, I decided two things: One, I affirm for probably the millionth time that Granddaddy was right, and two, let's rename this for a new century and our "evolved" society. Hence, I give an old concept a brand new name for a new time and season of life: The Boomerang Effect.
The Boomerang Effect isn't just about getting what's coming to you. It's about considering the interconnectedness of things, or if you prefer "the big picture." The Butterfly Effect are things you may or may not control or be aware of, but The Boomerang Effect is entirely in your hands and your awareness (well, if you choose to acknowledge the rewards or consequences of your actions, anyway). You throw it out there, and you get it back, somehow, someway. Actions and reactions from today come back tomorrow (or more likely, later) in ways that might surprise or amaze you. Here's an example: one day in 2010, I read an online article on the growth of ebooks, and how it was revolutionizing reading as we know it. I decided to look into it, read a few ebooks, and the next thing you know I've quit wasting my time querying traditional publishers and I'm actually a published author of ebooks. It took several years, but that's The Boomerang Effect. That article caused me to take action, which led to more action, which has continued to build even up to today. Bazinga!
Heck, everything I've described in this entry is kind of Boomerang Effect. Who knew writing a novel could bring about revelations, and revitalizing an old concept with a new name that I will probably use until it annoys you?
And yet, ironically, that's life and reality. It's all connected. And sometimes, you can affect the effect. Be wise about throwing those boomerangs, my friend.
