The latest issue of Writer's Digest covers an interesting topic. It's entirely dedicated to encouraging people to get back on track with their writing goals. The theme: it's never too late to be a writer. One thing that particularly struck me was a comment in the letter from the editor, where she writes that often, when we say "it's too late to do that," what we really mean is that we wish we had already done it.
Talk about calling it like it is, but I believe that's true. I've blogged many times on issues of timing, of opportunities and success and failure and life being sidetracked by decisions and circumstances. But this letter reminded me that whatever the reason, it's up to us to live with regret, or to take action later rather than never. We also need to have the discernment to know whether the course alteration is from fear of success, or divine intervention to give us what we need to succeed - and that success can be defined differently than we anticipated. Case in point: ebooks. They've opened a new door to publishing and, combined with social media, reaching readers. I certainly didn't expect the changes they brought to the publishing industry when I dreamed of being a writer as a kid, but I (and many other writers like me) am glad for it. It's an exciting new opportunity to succeed as a writer in a new way.
It doesn't just apply to writing, either. Time isn't up until you're dead, and if the desire is still alive in your heart, then maybe it's time to look at it from a different perspective. The world has changed a lot in the past two decades, making things possible in new ways. You can do a lot online now that you couldn't before. And for those things that haven't changed, it's possible that the new digital age has made it faster or easier to achieve your goals than it would have been 10, 20, or 30 years ago. The point is that it's never too late until you die. Sure, there's a lot in life and you can't do it all, but you'd be amazed at how much you CAN do if you redefine your parameters. Case in point: I don't have as much time for my love of crafting projects as I'd like, but I do what I can, when I can, and I've experienced a lot of joy and produced a lot from this hobby over the years despite the limits on my time. Sure, it's possible that the Lord has said "no" to something you want, but I've found that when that's the case, the desire usually passes with the opportunity. I once wanted to go to graduate school, but that clearly wasn't His plan, and that desire has passed. Unless you're incredibly stubborn, the things that stay on your heart with pure intentions are usually within His plan. Open you eyes. Did you wake up alive today? Then stop saying it's too late and get back to work. You may succeed in ways you never imagined.
