Today, it’s time for some straight talk about genres. First and foremost, the obvious: Happy Star Wars Day! May the 4th be with you! Fans unite and celebrate the space opera that’s defined generations today, and will continue to do so into the future.
But that’s not the only celebration going on. No, I don’t mean Cinco de Mayo tomorrow. Did you know that this week is Mystery Week! That’s right, head over to Goodreads and you’ll see celebrations of the mystery/suspense genre. My best selling novel, Move, is on sale for $0.99 this week, and I’m also happy to debut The Tanger Falls Mystery Box Set, which is Move and it’s sequel, Obsidian, for $2.99. These aren’t just my best rated mysteries, but my favorites that I’ve written as well. Honestly, I should have released The Tanger Falls Mystery years ago. The problem was that I started writing The Earthside Trilogy while Obsidian was in it’s final stages of preparation back in 2014, so that fell to the wayside. It didn’t come back to me until about two weeks ago, when I got the notifications from Goodreads about Mystery Week coming up. Oh well, better late than never.
I would like to return to writing mysteries, but the problem is threefold:
1. All of my ideas for the past 3 years have been scifi, and that trend looks like it will continue, as the ideas forming for my next book are scifi;
2. Progenitor and Metamorphosis have been my best reviewed books yet. Reviewers definitely like them better than previous works and they’re selling more consistently than the mystery novels, and Progenitor got my first award recognition last November; and
3. I get respect as a scifi writer. I know, that’s one of those uncomfortable things that should have been left unsaid, but this is my blog and my perception of truth, so get over it. Scifi may be a smaller genre, but the fans and reviewers are more aware and perceptive than most people are, well, everywhere else.
These aren’t insurmountable problems, but it means that my return to mystery may take more time. Bear in mind that I intended to write a follow up to Battleground Earth – Living by Faith in a Pagan World immediately after it’s 2004 release, but I didn’t have a viable draft until 8 months ago. Inspiration is a funny thing. Sometimes it hits fast, most of the time it comes gradually, and sometimes it’s a slow progression. The point is to never give up. Right now, I’m growing in scifi and stepping into inspirational non-fiction again. I’m sure the mystery day will come again.
For now, I’ll continue to enjoy what I’m doing, and to enjoy reading and reviewing mysteries. It’s a huge genre, and there’s a lot to enjoy. So get out there and find yourself a good title to check out this week!
