I got a rare gift this weekend: time at home to rest! Obviously, I spent it with what I like best: books. It allowed me an opportunity to make progress on my TBR (To Be Read) list for Indie Author Summer, and this time I ran across one I couldn’t put down.
The book is Dying for a Living, by Kory Shrum. Jesse Sullivan is a rare individual: she’s a Necronite; one of the 2% of the population that can rise from the dead. After controversial experimentation by the government, the revelation of these individuals has given rise to the death replacement industry, where Necronites can die for other people, allowing non-Necronites to live, and the Necronite to revive after a few days.
Of course, there are people who have a problem with this, and they decide to do something about it by killing off Necronites for once and for all by setting up fake “death replacement” scenarios, and decapitating the Necronites. When such an attempt is made on Jesse, she finds herself in the middle of one crisis after another: a federal investigation, battling traumatic childhood memories, on the run from the people trying to kill her, finding her MIA handler and mentor, and in the middle of a love triangle with her on-again, off-again boyfriend, and her best friend.
As you can tell, this is a fast paced novel, filled with action, twists, and turns. I love the unique premise of Necronites, and how Shrum has developed an urban fantasy world that so realistically depicts how society would truly react, instead of trying to glorify it or turn them into vigilante super-heros. This book is definitely a five star read, and an excellent example of the gems in the self-publishing world. Traditional publishers are shying away from paranormal/urban fantasy due to the saturation on their list, but Dying for a Living shows that the genre can still be resurrected if readers are willing to experiment with a unique approach to the topic.
Dark Mirrors will reflect the lighter side in the next Indie Author Summer pick, which is Posts from the Perch, by Becca Brandes. We are connected through Twitter, which is where I found this relatively new offering. It’s only available in paperback and is due to arrive late week, so you get the fun of normal blog posts for a while.
