Then again, I might have drifted to more complicated stories, or maybe writing sci-fi for the past nine years has changed my muse. The reviewer for Duality was surprised at the complexity of that story, and I considered that a lighter, seasonal mystery. While reviewers can surprise you, I’ve learned that it’s wise to heed their advice. They’ve always led me in the right direction and gave me valuable advice not only for the piece under review, but as a writer in general.
Maybe my latest foray into short stories is an attempt to hold on to some kind of simplicity. If that’s the case, then I’m succeeding there. I’ve written five stories over the past couple of weeks, and of those five only my Reedsy story entry for this week had what I considered publishable merit. We shall see if it hits the mark. The rest was, as I said my last entry, insufferable crap. In fact, I’ll entertain you with an example of a poem I wrote for my writing journal today:
Toss it all into the fire
And wipe away your tears.
Toss it all into the fire
And walk through every fear.
A season for all time and space
To seek your unique space.
Learn to give yourself grace
And get back in the race.
So toss it all into the fire
Acknowledge, then let go.
The only way to cope is grow
And find your unique flow.
Now you see why I’m not a poet. In fact, that’s only the second poem I’ve written since I was forced to in school. It’s a good enough writing exercise, and great for mental purging in the meditative sense, but not brilliant art at all. I think I gagged a little. I’ve never understood why I embrace big, complex things like a scifi or mystery novel, but suck at what should be easy. Oh well. You’ve got to be what you are.
The wall isn’t broken down, but there are cracks, and the efforts have soothed my soul. I’m just happy to be writing on a (almost) daily basis. It’s my joy. Honestly, I don’t know how the rest of you get through life not writing nearly every day.
And in closing, tomorrow is Bubbles “Gotcha Day.” We brought home this beautiful two-year-old Quaker Parrot on June 16, 2014. Now my feisty little Sci-Fi Queen is 9! And 9 is fine!
That’s all today. Take care. Have a Happy Friday tomorrow and a wonderful weekend.
Bye!
