It's over. The Christmas rush is done, and we took down the decorations today. The house looks strangely dark and empty without the trees and lights adding to the ambiance of the season. It's done. Overall, it was a good holiday season - the best one I've had for a couple of years - and now we're preparing for the New Year and the 2020's.
Honestly, I quit with New Year's Resolutions a few years ago. I read that most of them fail because they're more an act of will than of want. We try to force ourselves to do what we think we should be doing to make ourselves better, instead of following the prompting of the Holy Spirit to do what's right for us right now. So instead, I focus on doing my best each day. I try to discern what's needed, to create new habits where needed, and to make whatever changes are necessary where I'm at in this season of life. In other words, I learned to chill out and take life as it comes, instead of trying to force it where I want to go. Not that it was working, anyway. In fact, it was causing me quite a bit of frustration. This method - not so much. I don't claim that 2020 will "be my year" or "have my breakthrough." I know that's ultimately beyond my control, and won't be able to tell you if it did manifest until next year this time.
All I know is that I have a 100% rate of making it through so far, and that's pretty awesome. I do what works, I change what doesn't, I try to take advantage of opprortunities, and I just do the best I can, in every day and every situation. Sometimes it works. Sometimes, it doesn't and corrections must be made. But always, I move on and keep on keeping on.
I'm done feeling bad about myself. That's not how it's supposed to be. Not that I think we should have big egos and be overconfident, know-it-all, snarky pissants. It's about knowing yourself, and being true to it. I'm not better or worse than anybody else. I'm just me, doing the best I can, and that's good enough.
I pray you come to similar resolutions for yourself in 2020, because that is true. Accept what is and who you are - really and truly - and then you can move forward to become something better, in 2020 and beyond.
