Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving! I know it's early, but I also know that we'll all be busy kicking off the holiday season this week. I know the past couple of years have been tough, but hopefully we're all giving thanks for the Lord getting us through, and showing the light of hope for a better tomorrow.

Today, I'd like to continue my tradition of offering my Thanksgiving-Eve short story. This started as a fiction journal piece titled "The Long Way Home" a few years ago, but was one of those lucky stories to get "elevated" to publication in Alive - Slice of Life Vignettes last year. I hope you enjoy it.

Stay safe. I thank all of you for your friendship, and hope you have a blessed and joyful Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Eve

“The daily deposit is done, Mrs. Lanier,” Penny said. “Is there anything you need help with?”

Casey looked up from her computer at the secretary shifting from one foot to another. “How does traffic look out there?” The front office window of their small loan company was off a frontage road overlooking the Interstate.

“They cleared up that wreck from this morning. It’s not backed up anymore, but it’s heavy.”

Casey glanced at the clock on her computer, which read three o’clock. “Do you have any more paperwork for the day?”

“No ma’am.”

“Any appointments?”

“No ma’am.”

Casey picked up her pen and tapped it against her desk. “Are you heading out of town for Thanksgiving?”

“Yes ma’am. My car is packed, and I’m ready to go as soon as the workday ends,” Penny said.

Casey craned her neck to stare at the crawling traffic outside the front window. “Have a Happy Thanksgiving. Go see your family.”

Penny’s eyes widened. “Are you sure? Aren’t we supposed to stay open until five o’clock?”

Casey shook her head. “The CEO said we can close at four if we don’t get any walk in customers, and I doubt that will happen given the looks of things out there. Go ahead. I can hold it down for an hour. Fill out your timesheet for the full day and get on the road before it gets worse.”

“Thank you! Happy Thanksgiving!” Penny gushed.

“Happy Thanksgiving. Safe travels. I’ll see you next week.”

Casey sighed as Penny gathered her things and left the office. She was lucky that her family was in town and she didn’t have to travel for Thanksgiving, but she’d already had her nerves worn raw. Her parents had called three times and her in-laws texted her twice about the dishes they were bringing for Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. Her husband had called thirty minutes ago to say the kids were restless, so he was dragging out the Christmas decorations to keep them occupied, against her wishes to wait until Friday to decorate. Now she had to go home and clean up after that on top of rustling up supper and  starting to cook her dishes for tomorrow. Her best friend called her office line over lunch freaking out over her in-laws crashing in her home and “taking over.” It was going to be long weekend, but at least she and her family were local.

They would make it.  They always did, and this year would be no different. They would probably enjoy the chaos, too.

Casey shook it off and returned to her paperwork. Truthfully, the CEO said she could leave now too, but she wanted to embrace one more hour of peace before the holidays started.  There was plenty of time for family fun. For now, she could wrap up her workload in peace and go into the holidays with her mind clear of work issues. She’d enjoy this blessing before going home to another one soon.

Given that traffic, she should probably order a pizza for supper and take the back roads home. It was a shortcut supper and the long way home, but maybe it would be worth a few more minutes of peaceful preparation for the most wonderful time of the year.

Plot Twist - A  Fiction Journal Story

11/17/2021

Well folks, I remember why I used to go on a writing sabbatical in November and December. It's busy! There's something about the end of the year that motivates people to wrap things up and clean off their desk. It usually starts the week before Thanksgiving, which I call "the last normal week of the year," slows down Thanksgiving week, picks up in early to mid-December, and then one last push with New Year's Resolutions in the first week of January and "getting back to business" before everybody notices that every day dawns the same, whether it's the holidays or not.

Whew!

The writer's block is also still an issue, but I did manage to write a fiction journal story recently. I'm sharing it here for your entertainment. If you're tired of the cliche holiday romances, then this one's for you.

And if you want a bit more, set a reminder that The Earthside Trilogy will be free on Amazon November 22-26. Happy Thanksgiving, and enjoy!

Plot Twist

“Oh my gosh, I think I’m falling for Hank! I never expected to find love in this small town. It was just a distraction from my life in the city.”

The barista shook his head and rolled his eyes as the coffee maker gurgled to brew a fresh urn of coffee. “I don’t know, Crystal. You’ve been away for a long time, and worked hard to build the life you have.”

She pushed her blonde hair out of her face. “I never expected to come back home and find love. I spent my whole life getting out of this place.”

“Don’t do it,” I said.

The pretty blonde stared at me. “Why?”

I leaned close to her. “Don’t say anything, but I’m here from the future to stop terrible mistakes that will put the world in peril. This is one of them. Hank is a distraction. Wrap up the work on your grandmother’s estate, and go back home.”

Her blue eyes widened sparkling from the lights on the small table top Christmas tree next to the old fashioned cash register. “Really?”

I nodded. “Trust me, you’ll be sorry if you stick around. Blow this popsicle stand and get back to real life.”

She leaned against the counter. “You’re right. I just met Hank last week fixing up Grandma’s house. I thought about getting married and moving into the house instead of selling it, but I love my career, and the hustle and bustle of the city.” She looked out of the large window to the street decked out in Christmas wonderland décor. “I worked hard for the life I have.”

“Then keep it,” I said. “Don’t blow it over an emotional delusion. Sell the house, go back to the city, and invest the money. You’ll end out back there anyway. The real question is whether you go back with a stronger portfolio, or a divorced mother of two regretting this decision and looking for love again.”

“Crystal, order up!” the barista shouted.

She picked up her coffee, and stepped back closer to me. “Thanks. Was I about to make one of those mistakes you talked about wrecking the future?”

I smiled. “Not anymore. You just saved it. Have a nice life, and remember that you never saw me.”

She nodded and headed out of the door.

The barista handed me my coffee. “Thanks for the save. I take it you’re not really from the future?”

I took my coffee. “That depends. I had to borrow you FAX machine to send my report on small town markets after the COVID crisis to my team in the city because the Internet at the B&B I’m staying at stinks.” I took a drink of the coffee. “Who uses a FAX machine anymore?”

He laughed. “Maybe there is a time warp, but we’re the ones living in the past and you’re in the present.”

“Maybe.”

“Thanks for saving Crystal from making a terrible mistake,” the barista said. “I remember her from school. She’d be miserable if she came back here.”

“No problem. Actually, this whole ‘coming back home to the quaint town that never changed and finding love’ is so cliché that I had to throw in a plot twist.”

“It brought a spark of unexpected excitement to my day,” the barista said. “So how’s the 20th century coffee?”

I took another drink and nodded. “Good, actually. Sometimes the old ways are better.”

We laughed as the quaint crowd chattered behind me, embracing a moment of 20th century life as the FAX machine behind the counter finally hummed to life.

A War on Christmas?

11/5/2021

Picture
Not a war on Christmas per se, but a war on acknowledging Christmas before Thanksgiving. These arguments start every year right after Halloween, but them seem to be laced with more venom this year. Before, it wasn’t uncommon for me to see a post with a picture of a Christmas tree beautifully decorated and let, and next post was a picture of a storage shed with the caption “a picture of my Christmas tree, in the shed where it belongs.” Except this year, the second post has more colorful language. Heck, I even heard of a bar in Texas that banned “All I Want for Christmas is You” entirely in November, and limited to once a day in December.

I’m an “each holiday in it’s place” person, but I also do practical planning. Fall and Thanksgiving décor grace my home right now, which is particularly suitable since we live in the woods. We’ll transition to holly, jolly Christmas décor after Thanksgiving. However, I’ve already done some Christmas shopping. I usually start around Veteran’s Day to spread out the costs and workload, but with shipping delays I started in late October. I’m glad I did. I ordered a gift last night, and was astonished to get an estimated delivery time of November 29-December 20. I had my own outburst then. It was November 4 and I’m already cutting it that close? Good grief. It looks like I’m wrapping up the online orders this weekend, and will shop locally for the rest.

As for décor, I got a glimpse of understanding to why people may want to decorate early. Fall days are lovely but they’re short, and that will get worse when we go on Standard Time this weekend. It will be night almost as soon as you get off work. If you get a rainy or cloudy day this time of year, it's downright gloomy. It’s good to have the heat of summer burn off, but dreary days will drag down the best of us. No wonder some people want the glow of holiday lights to perk them up, especially if they live in place where grey days are the norm later in the year. Heck, I even published a short story in titled "November" in Short and Happy (or not): An International Anthology that's about a depressed woman seeking a spark of hope on one of these gloomy fall days. The editor actually asked me to slightly alter the ending because she thought the original version was too gloomy.

We all have our preferences, but we need to learn how to keep it in balance. I’ve already seen Christmas commercials and know the music is coming very soon. The better part of prudence led me to start shopping early. But those gifts are discretely packed away, awaiting their wrapping and packaging until we’re ready to take the décor out of the storage house and into the light.

That day will come, but for us it will be later. Until then, I’ll hold off on judgement. Do what’s right for you. If you’re ok with the tree in your house for two months, go for it. As for me and my house, we’re giving fall and Thanksgiving it’s due. Every season has blessings that make it wonderful.

That’s all today. Have a Happy Friday, and a wonderful weekend.

Bye!

Wake Up

11/1/2021

I need to let go of a great many things besides the hair I cut off and donated to charity Saturday. 2020-2021 have been tragic years for all of us, and it's overwhelming when you add the burden of personal circumstances that so many of us have faced. I know I feel like I’m waking up from a nightmare. The problem is it wasn’t a nightmare, it was reality.

Perhaps sometimes, you need to wake up from reality.

Two things came to me late last week and over the weekend that changed my perspective and convinced me that it’s time to let things go and move forward. First was a Joyce Meyer message I was watching Thursday while Rick was at the lodge. While the message on belonging to God was an important reminder, it was something she said that made me pause: “God wants you to step into the light.” It made me realize that while I’ve been walking in faith, I don’t think I’ve really been in the light in over a year and a half. Grief never goes away, but it’s time to let go of what it did to me and move on into the “after.” It’s time to go of the confusion, anger, sadness, and questions. It’s time to trade all of that for acceptance, contentment, and joy in the life I have right now.

The second thing was running across a video for the Lamb of God song “Memento Mori.” It's really about addition to technology, but I think it accurately reflects how all of us feel with this COVID pandemic changing the world. Nothing is what it used to be, but it’s time to wake up from the nightmare of shock and build a new reality.

I’ve had two people ask me recently what there is to look forward to. My answer: I don’t know, but we’re still here, so there’s hope. COVID was like the Perfection Game popping and throwing us all of of our molds. The problem is that the game board broke, and there's no mold to go back to. What do we do? We create a new mold through doing the right thing each day. It’s our job to appreciate our blessings and work it out. Since we don’t know what’s possible in the “big picture,” then we have to start with the small, everyday things and do what you can. Get up, get dressed, go to work, take care of your family and home, tend to your business, repeat the next day. And the day after that. And every day, until opportunities and possibilities emerge from walking faithfully in doing your best every day.

It’s strange to get a message from a Christian message and a heavy metal video, but the world is strange and they do go together nicely. It’s time for all of us to wake up, and walk into the light.

So folks, it’s time to lay aside the victim. We can only find our victory if we finally wake up from nightmare reality to the light of possibility. So do it. Wake up. It's time to wake up from that nightmare, and create the dream of the reality we want.

I’ll see you in the light, my friends.

That's all today. Take care, and have a great week.

Bye!
