Have People Changed? (And Is It For Better Or Worse?)

8/29/2018

My parents and I had a discussion recently about how differently people think these days. It seems that people even 5-10 years younger than me have a radically different mindset and perspective on life. I asked them: was Generation X as outspokenly liberal as Millennials are perceived now, or have people really changed?

Their answer: absolutely. They went on to say they're glad my brother and I were born in "the last generation with traditional values." My father went on to say he decided to retire in 2014 because people had changed. They're less patient, and they don't like to think. They want what they want when they want it, no matter what. And they don't care what the cost is to themselves or others as long as they're happy right now. There's no long term perspective.

Of course, your parents will flatter you. So I pose this question to a larger, more diverse audience (I hope) in this blog: is Generation X the last generation with traditional values?

I don't know. I do see my parents' point. I've been in the workforce for over 20 years, and I agree that people are more demanding and less patient than they were when I graduated college. I'll also say that people are more reticent to think than they used to be. People will ask questions now that they were too embarrassed to admit to even 10 years ago. I guess people think that if you can ask Google anything, then you should be able to ask anybody anything. Or perhaps it's that "there's no such thing as a stupid question" fiction that was so popular back in the 2000's.

You'd think that access to so much information would improve us, and maybe it has in other ways. I know the Internet has made research for my novels so much easier now. We do have a lot of information at our fingertips. We also have a lot of cat videos and meme's, so I suppose that too can go another way. For every Voyager Probe picture of the outer reaches of the solar system, there's a political tirade. It's all out there. I saw an article that conservatives need to create their own version of YouTube because they're being silenced online by Google a month ago. Now, I hear that Google is left-leaning. What's right? Is there even any middle ground anymore?

I don't know. There's no doubt that the world is changing. The question is: will this moderate as the Millennials enter middle age? Gen X has mellowed out and found their middle ground, as have generations before them. Will the circle continue, or are their numbers and culture really big enough to change things?

Or is it possible that it has been changing with each successive generation, slowly and surely, and now we're at the tipping point? Technology gave us a huge shove forward between Gen X and the Millennials. Perhaps we're still trying to find that balance between ability and evolution that I'm always talking about.

I don't know. I pose this to you, dear readers. Think it over. There's no doubt that we've changed. The world changes, and we have to change with it to adapt. The question is, are we changing for the better? Or are we still on a huge learning curve to find our balance in a world that's changed faster than we have?

That's all today. Take care, and have a great rest of the week.

The Gift of Ambiguity

8/22/2018

I think it's natural to ponder when you have a birthday coming up. I've been thinking a lot lately about how several losses in my life have changed me over the years. In particular, I can say this: if Ollie and my father-in-law's death made me feel that I lost my humanity, then I certainly found it again when Chloe died. I have changed over the past 8 months since her loss, but I don't think that's a bad thing. In fact, it might be good for me to see my growth in dealing with the effects of grief, and how I handle the ambiguity of life.

Of course we change as we get older, and the unexpected events in life are usually the key events that kick off a metamorphosis in us. These changes are often difficult and painful. Paradigm shifts are tough to deal with, and it's frustrating and confusing to find yourself turned upside down and questioning all you know. But in the end, it can lead to wisdom and discovery that helps us to build a better life.

We don't plan for the unexpected. We don't plan for the death, the illness, the injury, the accident, the job change, the family situation, the friend that betrays you, the job/promotion you didn't get, the opportunity that got away, the door that closed and you don't know why, the thing that just didn't work out, the loss, the thing you didn't ask for but got anyway, the dream that turned sour, the goal that crumbled, or the million other ways that life goes wrong. But they happen, not because God is angry or for any retribution against us, but because this is life, and life is unfair, unpredictable, and uncontrollable.

If we're lucky, we gain wisdom and become better people because of it. We gain virtues we need. We realize that our goals change. The chips are filed off our shoulders. We see how we've outgrown old things and are growing into new things. If we're really lucky, we lose our fear and embrace a life not made of starry-eyes fantasy, but with full knowledge that reality is gritty and painful, but good things can also happen if we persevere and stay the course.

Yes, I've lost things and had disappointments. But I'm still alive, and my life isn't even half over. Good things can happen. I believe that. I have changed and am still changing. That's ok, because I see that I need to. I just have to overcome my dislike of ambiguity and learn that the places where I can't have cognitive closure are the places where I have my greatest lessons of living by faith, and trusting that the Spirit will guide me when I can't see the way from where I am to where I'm going.

One gift of middle age is knowing that I'll make it. I've made it through many transitions so far, so I know the Lord will see me through this one. The trick is not to give in to anxiety or fear, but to persevere, and to believe.

That's all today. Take care, and have a great rest of the week.

Bye!

Summer Wanes

It’s hard to believe that summer is waning. It’s still hot outside, but you can tell that the world is shifting into “fall” mode. The days are even shorter. It’s not by much, but you can feel it. I used to see the light of sunrise when I got up for work. Now, it’s closer to breakfast time, and I swear that Zack and Bubbles are ready to give me the “middle toe” when I wake them in the mornings. I can’t blame them. Who wants to be up before sunrise?

There’s something melancholy about late summer. Perhaps it harkens to the ‘back to school’ days, when summer was ending and it was time to get back in that routine. Perhaps it’s because the heat is really starting to wear on us. Perhaps it’s that strange angle of the sun in the sky where you feel the heat, but you see and feel the world shifting ever so slowly, as if to say “wait, it’s coming --.”

I have mixed feelings about fall. I agree that it’s the most beautiful season of the year, but I’ve also faced my worst losses and challenges during the fall. That’s not to say they’ve all been bad. There have been good experiences as well. My birthday is in the late summer, I met and started dating Rick in the fall, and we completed construction and moved in our home in the fall. I also had some of my toughest times professionally, and lost 2 grandparents and our sweet Chloe in the fall. Perhaps it’s the mix that makes fall kind of melancholy. Sure, anything can happen at any time, but there’s a natural “winding down” feel to fall that makes you feel a sense of finality that you don’t feel at other times of the year. Winter is about new resolve and starting over. Spring is about rebirth. Summer is celebrating life. Fall is an interweaving of it all, bringing things together in the symphony that is life. Perhaps we figure it out in the fall. Perhaps that’s when all things come together. Perhaps we finally ‘get it’ and see how things fit together in the big picture of life.

Or perhaps I’m overthinking things. They have what meaning we put to them. We’ve chosen the fall as the “back to routine” time of year when things kick into the “life gear.” It seems that back to school feeling doesn’t end when we graduate. It seems that it continues on, leaving us in a natural cycle of evaluating and adjusting life according to our season.

There is something about late summer and fall, but it’s important to temper our thoughts and expectations. As with all seasons, anything can happen. We do ourselves a favor if we walk in obedience to the Spirit and take it a day at a time in hopeful expectation. We may not know of what, but we can trust it’s for something good.

That’s all today. Take care. Have a Happy Friday tomorrow and a wonderful weekend.

Bye!

Why The Final Frontier Is So Final

8/14/2018

I recently read an online article that said the biggest hurdle to space exploration is us. Interstellar travel is something that will require humanity (and specifically, world governments) to make a huge investment in things that we likely won’t see results from in our lifetime. The problem, besides the costs, is our own shortsightness. Simply stated, human beings are too impatient to invest in the long term initiative of really exploring and expanding into outer space.

It’s hard to argue. I’ve blogged many times about our inability to consider the ‘big picture’ and lack of initiative for investing in things without an immediate payoff. In one way, it’s the disadvantage of human nature. Anybody specializing in psychology (or advertising) will tell you that the primary question in everything is “what’s in it for me?” or, by extension, “how will this help my kids?” If that answer is nothing for you, and more costs and work for your kids, we aren’t inclined to do it because there’s no payoff that we can perceive. Why would we sow seeds we’ll never benefit from? You can’t expect future generations to appreciate the efforts, anyway, because what comes easy is usually taken for granted. If you need an example, just look at The Bible. Life in the Promised Land fell apart pretty quick. It only took a couple of generations upon settling for people to turn away from the Lord, leading to a chain of events taking them into 70 years of captivity. We really haven’t evolved since then - or really, ever since civilized society began. Heck, our technology has surpassed our evolution by a millennia or two. How can we truly reach for the stars when we can’t handle life on Earth?

Man hasn’t been to the moon since 1976. We have the International Space Station, but our efforts since then have been largely unmanned, robotic missions. We’ve learned a lot from them, but the fact is that we’re no closer to expanding humanity into the solar system now than we were in the years after I was born. There’s been a lot of talk about a manned mission to Mars, but the truth is that Mars is still just home to our robotic life. I’ll bet aliens would get a kick out of that. We have other probes hurtling through space, including the New Horizons probe that found the hydrogen wall at the outer edge of the solar system, but what benefit does that have beyond exploration? The answer: plenty, if we plan to do something with it. Not that much if it’s archived and posted on Wikipedia as a “fun fact” for scifi writers to use as a suspension-of-disbelief mechanism in our novels.

I had the aliens come to us in The Earthside Trilogy because I believe it’s more likely that we won’t really do anything about our space explorations until there’s a threat to  humanity from “out there.” You see here some of my own political beliefs at work. There are plenty of people on Earth who have a desire to expand to the stars, but they aren’t the ones holding the purse strings and making the decisions that can convert this desire to reality. Our focus is, and always has been, on the immediate problems in front of us (and influencing campaign results). We certainly can’t ignore that, because the issues of living on Earth must be dealt with. But what if there’s an answer “out there” that could help us “down here,” if only we’d open our eyes and our minds to greater possibilities? But we put people in power who say they’ll fix these problems while securing themselves, and keep believing the lie that things will change with every election. But that’s another blog post. Let’s stick to science today.

We  talk about investing in the future, but only do it to a limited degree. And the truth is that overpopulation and environmental issues are growing beyond the capacity of this planet to solve on our current scale. We have to grow beyond the problems to find long term solutions. We have to keep stretching beyond where we are to pave a path to where we want to be. Everything has changed in our generation. Communication has linked the entire planet and widened our perspective to larger proportions than ever before in human history. It’s time to grow into our achievements, and keep growing beyond them. Stop reinventing cell phones and computers, and branch out into new things. We need to break out of the rut we’re trying to settle in and look at what we’ve discovered in a different light before we reach a desperation point that will blind us to possibilities are in front of us right now and can be taken advantage of as an opportunity to secure the future.

Forget about whether or not future generations will appreciate the investment, or the effort. This world will forget you in time, but it can’t forget what it has as a result of the efforts of those who went before, whether they remember (and appreciate) them or not. Do what’s right because it’s right. It’s what we’re supposed to do anyway. We’re supposed to grow. We’re supposed to evolve. Let’s do our part and leave a legacy behind for future generations to build on.

It’s time for mankind to evolve. Let’s get out of survival mode finally, and shift to “thriving.” Let’s us science to improve our life on Earth, and open possibilities beyond it. Let’s take that first step. Don’t wait for the aliens to land in the Walmart parking lot. Take the initiative and do it now.

That’s all today. Take care, and have a great week.

Bye!

Rewrites Done and Grace Abounds!

8/1/2018

Rewrites on Trigger are complete! I’ve completed rewrites on both of my novels-in-progress in the past months. I can’t thank my beta readers enough for their feedback on Trigger and Convergence. Thanks to you, both of these novels are much better than they were before. You’ll definitely get a shout out in the acknowledgements when these ebooks publish.

I’m blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by great, supportive people. As I mentioned in my last blog, it makes a huge difference when you have a strong inner circle and a crew of great, loyal, dependable people as part of your network. I recently read that the Lord gives you “grace for your place.” I see myself surrounded by that grace not only with His love and favor, but in guidance through the Spirit, and the wonderful people in my personal life. It’s true that a lot of what you are is based on who you choose to surround yourself with, and I’m surrounded by awesome. Great husband and birds, great family, great friends, great home, great church. Grace abounds!

Best of all, I finished this round of writing before the season premiere of Better Call Saul, so I’m returning to my normal routine with something good to look forward to (and something decent to watch on TV – finally! Has it really been two and a half months since my CW shows ran season finales?). It’s time to get back to life now, and find out what I missed in the past month while I was in my own worlds.

That’s all today. Take care, and have a great rest of the week.
