So, what are you reading goals for 2026? I was at the library yesterday to get a start on mine. and picked up a variety of tales, from one last Christmas book, to a nonfiction guide for writing in the age of AI, to my old standby Tony and Anne Hillerman mysteries. It got me thinking about different types of readers, and what I particularly look for in a book. Sometimes (like yesterday) I hit the jackpot, and other times (like when I was off in November), I walk away frustrated and empty handed. Today, let's talk about three signs that you're my kind of reader:
1. You're looking for something that makes you think. You don't mind books that stretch your mind in all directions, and if you learn something, all the better. Sure, fiction is for entertainment, but you can also find learning and inspiration in it as well. If it challenges you and lives in your memory after you close the ereader or book, that's a five star winner. After all, don't we see something of ourselves in the characters? Why not learn and grow from our entertainment? Feeling good isn't just about the story, it's about what you find of yourself in it.
2. You feel trapped and want to break free. By middle age, we've been doing what we're doing long enough to have some wisdom to embrace our authenticity. Unfortunately, the world wants to push that experience and self confidence down, because it values conformity and keeping us impressionable. We don't conform. Now not, and maybe not ever. Women of our age aren't ashamed of our maturity, we embrace it as a victory that we've survived half of our life and are ready to break the boxes and glass ceilings that society puts on us to keep us "in our place." If you're ready to break free, this is the place to be.
3. Your youthful expectations of reality have been broken, and you're ready to build a new one. Your 40's are good at kicking you in the butt and driving you to either shrivel up and give up, or find and embrace your strength. We've done the latter. We know we're in our prime, and are ready to make mid-life changes to create a new season of life that is more expansive and explosive than the first half.
So in short, if you:
- Deleted the Hallmark app on your TV and are eagerly awaiting the finale of Stranger Things tonight;
- Smirked at the trainer on your workout video talking about your body changing and said "**** that, let's do this!" or
- Saw those grey hairs in the mirror and cheered because it means you've survived 100% of what life has thrown at you, and that's the only perfection in your life -
Stick around! My goal for 2026 is to make Broken Reality Books a community of like-minded women who want to create their own new reality. I'm going to shift my focus not only to books, but to connection with others who are sick of the world telling us that we're old and "aren't you planning on retirement yet?" (Answer: that's like asking "are you going to die. Um, yes eventually, but it's not on the master plan for today!).
We are not old, and it's not too late. We are, in fact, in our prime, and are ready to BRING IT!
Join me! Follow me on my social media pages on the About Me page and let's form a community of Gen X women who intend to carry our sassy attitude straight into middle age, and beyond!
Happy New Year, everybody! I pray it's a blessed and joyful one, and look forward to sharing it with you.
Love,
Sherri
