Exiled by choice. United by fate.
Dr. Addison Lybrand’s career ends the moment the object she’s tracking vanishes beyond the heliopause. Discredited by her mentor and expelled from Earth by an authoritarian regime, she accepts a last, remote assignment: studying the object’s lingering spatial distortions at Kuiper Station One, the solar system’s farthest outpost.
Then Earth is attacked.
Cut off from inner worlds and hurled into isolation ahead of schedule, Addison and three fellow exiles are left to survive on the edge of civilization. When the object returns—closer, faster, and violently altered—they uncover a chilling truth: their exile may have been voluntary, but nothing else was. Every accusation, every banishment, every move has been engineered to drive them toward a single, impossible end.
I also have to admit that I was wrong on yet another point, in addition to my recent YouTube video inspired by a book I recently read. I resisted using AI to assist with my writing, but I’ve been experimenting with it for a month, and it is a powerful and helpful tool that’s well worth integrating into my writing process. In fact, it was AI revisions that convinced me to change the title from Refraction to Exile. I see a theme of exile emerging in the book, and realized that better captured the concept of this opening novel for the trilogy. You were right! AI isn’t perfect, but it’s a powerful tool that is helping me to become a better writer faster than my older, slower processes did. Plus, it gives readers what they want quicker: new books!
The new year is blasting off for me, and I’m embracing the change. I got overwhelmed last week when I realized how much time and mental energy habits and routines save (see the article I published last week titled “My AI and Me”), but I took my own advice over the weekend to rest and be kind to myself, and this week has been an explosion of creativity. I’ve been thrilled as revisions and edits to Exile progress, and I published another article titled “How to Be Happy in Mid-Life.” It turns out that growth is inevitable, and acceptance of that fact is a powerful thing. I’d still like to skip past the trial-and-error methods and have this new stuff nailed and fully integrated, but I am finding joy in the discovery part of the process. Change isn’t all bad after all, especially when you take an active role in integrating it into your life appropriately.
I wanted to let you know that I have two special offers going now. First, if you sign up for my newsletter on the main page, then you’ll not only get my next issue on Monday (January 19), but you’ll also get Anywhere But Here for free. It’s a novel about a woman who battles the demon of depression (literally!) and is no longer in print, so the only way to get it is through the newsletter signup. Also, The Sentience Series is on sale this weekend for $1.99 ebook and $12.99 paperback! If you need to load up your ereader or bookshelf with winter reading, then this is a chance! Go grab this four novella set at deep discount while it lasts!
I hope 2026 is off to a great start for you. My goal is to create a supportive community where we grow together, and I look forward to sharing this journey with you both here and across my social media channels. Stay tuned for more updates and lessons on my discovery journey as life opens into new frontiers for us all!
That’s all today. Take care. Have a Happy Friday tomorrow and a wonderful weekend.
Bye!
