It really boils down to one issue: fate and free will. This is something that I still haven’t reconciled, and in fact I’m leaning toward thinking that they’re two driving forces in the symbiotic circle of universal chaos. We always have a choice, of course, but why do some choices keep coming back to us? Why do we have lingering regrets over missteps and mishaps? Why do those mishaps even happen? I know the nature of the universe is chaos, but it seems that a strange sense of order emerges in it, showing connections and links that you never expect.
Exile explores five people facing life transitions when an object appears in the heliopause that suggest life beyond what we know, and an authoritarian Earth government decides to have no part of it and exiles all of the scientists, engineers, and others who work on interstellar development from the planet. While some connections are apparent – there are two parent/child relationships – each person finds that they’re connected to the others in complex ways that coincidence can’t explain. By the end of this short, 184 page book, you find their lives and stories forming a story that’s literally too big for the universe to hold.
It reflects my life. I’ve lived in Columbia, South Carolina, my entire life, and it seems that everywhere I go, I find connections with at least one (and often more than one) person. Even if I leave town, I cross paths with somebody who is connected to me in some way, either directly or indirectly. For example, last night I went to my husband’s retirement dinner. I didn’t personally know a soul there, but when we were leaving one of the other retirees called me by maiden name, which I haven’t had since 1998. It turns out that my mother taught preschool to her two children almost 30 years ago, and my husband was working at her school at that time.
It’s interesting to see how the chaos of the universe winds into such patterns. So what do you think? Is there “no fate but what we make,” or does every thought and action work together to weave an ultimate destination that we can’t escape?
That’s all today. Take care, and have a great weekend.
Bye!
