Introduction - Battleground Earth
Ladies and Gentlemen, there is a battle going on. A battle that began with the dawn of man continues to rage around you every day. The fighting is fierce, and the stakes are high. Some may say your soul hangs in the balance of this battle.
Scary, isn’t it? It makes you want to go home and hide under your covers. Maybe there you will be safe. Wrong! No matter where you go, you can’t hide. Your own home is not safe – there are many ways in. Telephones, televisions, mailboxes, radios, Internet service; these “modern day conveniences” make bringing the battle into your home easier. The people you share your home with could be a threat. In fact, you aren’t even safe from yourself.
The battle I am referring to is the battle between Christ and Satan. The minute sin entered the world a fierce battle began between the forces of good and evil. In that moment, the Earth, God’s footstool, also became the devil’s playground. God’s beloved creation became tainted by the temptation of the devil and these forces have been at odds ever since; constantly struggling over our souls. These forces simply cannot coexist, and struggle over which one dominates. The Bible even asks, “How can Christ and the devil agree?” (2 Corinthians 6:14). This battle may seem like something that is not your concern, but I assure you that it is. In fact, your soul does hang in the balance. The battleground of the earth is, in fact, taking place in your mind.
You only have to turn on the news or read the newspaper to see the overwhelming impact of evil in this world. Of course, September 11, 2001 probably comes to mind first, and that was a shocking demonstration of the power of evil. No doubt, we will never be the same. But the evidence is also apparent in other ways that don’t make the evening news. Just look around your community. Murders, thefts, rapes, robberies, kidnappings – our society is inundated by violence and perversion. Addictions, affairs, and violence break countless families apart. The media is swamped with this to the point that it is even becoming part of our entertainment in television, music, and movies. This is a dangerous world we live in, and there are no safe havens left in this battle.
Fortunately, you do not have to live in the bondage of evil. God cared enough to send His son, Jesus, to save us. I am sure that living for 33 years in this crazy, battle-scared world was not His idea of a good time, but Jesus cared enough for humanity to take on the burden of our sins so we would have ultimate victory. Through His death, Jesus paid the price for out sin by taking the death we deserve and giving us the gift of eternal life. To claim
this salvation, He only asks that we believe in Him and follow His example.
Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? But I’m sure you question the practicality of this request. After all, doesn’t Jesus know how bad things are? Actually He does, and He cares. The man that was betrayed by one of His own disciples and crucified by the ones He came to save knows all too well how dangerous this world is. His own people didn’t accept him. Yet He left us an example of how to overcome this world. There is one overriding theme throughout all the virtues Jesus taught His followers, and it is the ultimate weapon in this battle. That thing is faith. By living a life of genuine faith, you can elevate yourself from the trenches of the battle to the higher kingdom of God.
I have wonderful news for all of you. You don’t have to live as a victim of this battle! You can rise above the burdens of this world if you are willing to devote yourself to a life of faith. Here I must warn you that it will not be easy. It’s not enough to simply accept Christ as your Savior and go to church once a week. Being a believer may save your soul, but it won’t protect you from the abuse of the world or give you true peace. In order to achieve a confident stance in this battle, you must dedicate yourself to a daily walk with God and a constant renewing of your faith. Satan hates faith and will use all of his power to discourage us, drag us down, and shatter our hopes of seeing victory. He knows he cannot win the ultimate battle against God,but he is determined to take as many of us as possible into defeat with him!
My goal in this book is to help you achieve this faith in your life. I don’t care what denomination you are; faith is an integral part of every Christian’s life. Throughout the next eight chapters, we will look at various ways that the battle takes place. We will look at situations that the devil will use to destroy our faith and find ways to strengthen it instead. Hopefully, I will learn something with you, and we will all come away as victors in the ultimate battle.
Jesus said, “ I did not come to bring peace, but a sword” (Matthew 10:34). He knew the battle was on! Let us follow His wonderful example and prepare to fight this battle to win.
